ABOUT THE DESIGNER
CATHERINE JANE GATES

I have a Bachelor of Design in Interior and Spatial design from UTS Sydney and specialised in temporal spaces including theatre design, exhibition design, ambiguous spaces (similar to urban architecture,) and temporal spaces (spaces that have a non-specific function / change function over time.)

After going the corporate route, I recognised that people wanted spatial experiences designed so that their target market could experience their brand direct and solidify that sense of loyalty connection. I recognised both the opportunities and waste of resources for the purposes of mass profit. This went against my values and i moved to the Northern Rivers in Northern NSW to rebuild my foundations and include people in the conversation.

Here I experimented with dance and movement (awareness play, The Feldenkrais Method, contact improv, NIA dance, restorative yoga, and contemporary dance, (to name a few.) During this time I also studied the effects of trauma on the body and one’s ability to relate and connect, understanding the work of Pat Ogden, Norman Doidge and Peter Levine.

During this time, my own life experiences pushed me towards unconventional healing modalities including, Soul Voice, Kinesiology, Heart Math and Access Bars to release trauma from the body. I also participated in more conventional forms of psychotherapy such as Gestalt Therapy, as well as somatic experiencing of Family Constellations and Psychodrama. All these modalities were extremely useful to the processing of emotions, however I recognised their limitations as people are products of both their experiences and their circumstances. It seemed wrong to ignore the experience of the body and the environment when ‘connecting’ with the self and the other.

While experiencing these side passions, I also discovered that one could experience community and connection all without words. The work of Johann Hari illustrated ideas for community connection through slight changes in everyday life, and I have actively lived these lifestyle changes to encourage others to embrace a slower way of living.

I sought out Non-Violent Communication (popularised by Marshall Rosenberg.) and slowly mastered the practice of empathetic connection over 4.5 years; attending advanced workshops and weekly practice groups with both Paulette Bray-Narai and Alexandra Norman.

I recognised the value of empathy-in-action, but also the limitations of language to connect with both the self and the other in relationship. The way that people verbalise themselves can easily filter out or bypass sensations in their body, so the final result is already diluted. This affects the dynamic of the relationship, placing pressure on the ‘other’ to track their emotions, and listen for unmet needs.

I began incorporating Non-Violent Communication (NVC) in my daily work in the strata management / body corporate industry, participating in mediations between individuals within apartment complex communities. It became obvious that due to a mass empathy deficit in the world at present, combined with the increasing pressures to support one’s self (against unfair odds,) people are becoming ever-more fearful of the power of connection. Interactions are brief and clinical, and people want the quick fix solution without the effort to process and understand each others' perspective.

In my spare time I began to experiment with a new method of communication incorporating spatial design. This involved playing around with temporal spaces to help mediate the process of understanding between two people in relationship to each other. I recognised that people need to somatically experience and move through sensations in relation to a something, rather than retreat into the depths of their mind for a solution. The spatial interventions have the power to connect, disrupt, uncover, hide, or illuminate the instantaneous core response of the participant, bypassing the multiple filters of their minds.

At this time in history, it seems that the ego and the heart are locked in battle, with people desperate to reclaim their authentic self, but feeling they don’t have as much choice and control over their destinies. They have lost the inherent connection to the collective consciousness, and must learn, through genuine understanding and connection with others, that they have a purpose and a responsibility to themselves and life with awareness.

I've known that this new method is my life's purpose since i was a child, but it has taken me 35 years to really understand what it is, how i can help, and how it can benefit humanity. Now is the time to expand outwards and offer it to community so we may enrich our lives with authentic, heart-felt communication as the new standard for living.

There are some things I know for certain:

Keep your pockets full of dreams,
Design your map full of wonder,
Travel far enough until you meet your true self,
And draw your own constellations.

The pause clarifies intention,

A response seeks acceptance.

Hesitation quivers, pending
resolve -

Perseverance is unfolding.

RESPECT THE TRUTH TELLERS

Integrity of a persons character cultivates honesty. It is within the humility of a person asking for consideration that true connection endures.

Imagine if the people in your daily life were a reflection of your true character. What would it feel like to engage in a conversation with them? Would you feel empowered to speak your truth in a situation? If you disagreed on a topic, would their words cause you to react in haste or respond with care?

During any conversation or personal exchange, an opportunity arises to create togetherness through mutual improvement. Participants are actively invested in creating a wholesome and nourishing feeling to equally share.

Honesty allows us to be as we are and live fully in the present. In that moment, we can simply exist.
